Conflict in the Workplace


Every workplace has an own conflict whether it gives the positive effect or the negative effect. Nevertheless, it can disrupt the company reputation. Conflict can be happened itself or existed by employees itself.  Sometimes, conflict may be caused by the management whether from the aspects of intricate rules, tight schedule and others. Sometimes also, conflict may be caused by employees who dissatisfied with the leadership style of superior administer and manage the subordinates.

From the aspect of management such as complicated rules, tight schedule and others, we difficult to dispute. It is because when we agreed to work or employed in a company, we must accept whatever the rules that determined. When we do not accept the determined rules, what for we work at that company. Perhaps, we better resign from working at that company because do not be able to accommodate at that company from coerced to willing ourselves to work comfortably at there. However, when we are not comfortable with the determined rules, we can voice out dissatisfaction or an opinion prudently to the superior. Despite that, not all superior can accept the opinion from their subordinates. When they listen to their subordinate’s opinions, maybe they will feel that their ego will be defied. They also will feel that their subordinates are not qualified to voice out their opinion or suggestion to them. It is because they feel they are qualified to make a decision for any matter without requiring their subordinate’s opinion. It caused that they are superior. This is clear to show their unprofessional and unopen-minded in listening other’s opinion. When this occurred, their subordinates will feel uncomfortable and humble for voicing out their opinion and suggestion. It will evoke the unhealthy situation between superior and subordinate.

Besides, conflict can be happened when discrimination done by the management toward some employees. Generally, some company owned by Chinese people, unjust to Malay employees. One of the unfair management is apportionment of salary rate among Chinese employees and Malay employees. We may take an example from a factory in Johor that 100% owned by Chinese people which the salary rate are given to Chinese employees are higher than Malay employees. As an example, the salary rate which given to Chinese employees who work as a technician that have a diploma qualification are RM1,800.00 even though do not have any experience. Differs with the salary rate which given to Malay employees who work as a technician that have a diploma qualification are in range of RM1,100.00 to RM1,300.00 although have a suffice experience. Occasionally, some Chinese employees do not have a skill that needed for some employment. Although that, they still employed. Most of them are more to know the theory aspect than the dexterity aspect. Not only that, the promotion over Malay employees also difficult done by the Chinese owner of a company. Although not all company do like that, but most of the Chinese owner of a company do in that way. They are more prioritizing their community because maybe they want to help their community first than other communities. This will raise dissatisfaction among Malay employees. When this happens, this will increase the cessation rate among Malay employees. Even though Human Resource Department which taking care of employee's welfare in a company, sometimes they cannot do anything because its subject to the owner of a company, especially if the owner of a company is Chinese peoples. Meanwhile, for the Malay owner of a company, they seldom do like that. Do not know what the cause, perhaps their way of thinking are differ with the Chinese owner of a company. Although this is difficult to agreed, but for the reality, this is actually happens at this time. However, it has ever to occur when some employees are wise to ingratiate their employer, maybe they easy to get the promotion immediately irrespective of either woman or man. It depends on the superior to make a decision shrewdly and rationally.

From the aspect of conflict that caused by the employee itself, at times, some employees dissatisfied with their friend’s promotion. Probably on their mind, ‘why she qualified whereas why i am not? I am more qualified.’ When this raise, the relationship between her and her friend will become estrange and hostile, whereas before this, it is not. Other than that, some employees dissatisfied with privilege and attention that given by the superior differ with other employees. Some employees are given more privilege and attention, while some are not. As an example, some employees easy to apply leave such as sick leave, emergency leave and others, some difficult to get the leave approval. Nevertheless, perhaps it subject to employee’s attitude and performance itself.


Here, we able to conclude that although conflict in the workplace gives more negative effects than positive effects, it remains able to contribute the positive change to each employee. Every employee gets to study from the past mistake for become the best and dedicated employee. It means an experience teach the meaning of life to become better. Deem this conflict as a journey in wading the world of employment.



*When you see the sentence of 'Sometimes, conflict may be caused by the management whether from the aspects of intricate rules, tight schedule and others. Sometimes also, conflict may be caused by employees who dissatisfied with the leadership style of superior administer and manage the subordinates', i try to say that it means conflict may be caused by any matter either by the management or the employees itself. Based on the sentence of paragraph 3, i use proof substitute, which 'for the Malay owner of a company, they seldom do like that. Do not know what the cause, perhaps their way of thinking are differ with the Chinese owner of a company. Although this is difficult to agreed, but for the reality, this is actually happens at this time', i have no proof to show that it really happens. I want to state my view that most of the Malay owner of a company rarely to treat their employees unfairly. They are too kindly and softly. Perhaps, we can see generally in Malaysia. However, not all Chinese employer treat their employees unjustly. Some of them are give an attention to their employees better than Malay employer itself.
